Thrift Store Score: Vintage Souvenir Plate Collection

20 Aug

I’m finally getting back into the swing of things and later this week should have finished uploading the latest collection for the Little Big Shop, I Heart America vintage souvenir plates. I’ve been amassing a sizable collection slowly over time and after choosing my favorites to display on my wall I’ve decided the time has come to share the vintage love and list the rest on Etsy.

It’s going to be really hard to give some of these up. I started collecting souvenir plates just for fun, but they really grew on me.

Check out that Great America plate in all its 1980s glory.

I haven’t been to a lot of these places, so buying the plates seemed to reinforce my determination to go there someday.

I especially love the various Seattle World’s Fair plates. My mom went to that World’s Fair and rode the Space Needle.

Sometimes I think my mom is cooler than I am.

I love all the gold accents so many of the plates have.

It’s funny how a little ol’ souvenir plate collection can fill one full of national pride. A-Merika! Eff yeah!

I bet a movie buff or a budding director would love a vintage Universal Studios plate.

If you look carefully I do have a plate that’s not from the US stuck in there. It’s from Italy and it depicts the leaning tower of Pisa. The plate itself isn’t perfectly round, and I’m not sure if they made it all wonky because the tower is wonky or if it’s just a hilarious coincidence. I’m sure you can see why I couldn’t leave it behind.

I know I have a few more stashed away in boxes, but for now I’m working on getting these listed and up in the shop. Each purchase will come with a print of the I heart America photo at the top of the post. Look for them soon!

Update: Here they are in all their vintage souvenir glory!

I am mildly obsessed with World’s Fairs. I am so jealous of your mom!

Lovely collection, as a former Washington-ite I adore the space needle and Washington plates. Also love the California, New Orleans, and Yosemite. I have to practice real restraint when I come across these guys in the thrift! (still need to photograph my 5 or so plates!)

Of course I found like three other plates in my stash right after I posted this. D’oh!

I really love these little guys.

These are so cute! Having just returned from San Francisco it’s neat to see the plates from there.

The SF plates are probably my fave. How did you enjoy your trip? I just love that city by the bay!
