–Our family has survived the barfpocalypse and my three-bottle-a-day hand sanitizer habit managed to keep me from participating. I think this is the first time in history everyone in the family has gotten sick while I managed to avoid it. I’m sure the steroids played a helping hand with that. It feels like victory.
—I sometimes use a cane now. Deal with it.
–Last week Anthony ran for election to be a Bernie delegate at the upcoming convention. It was really close but he lost by just a handful of votes. I’m so proud of him. He’s never participated in politics before and he’s just put such amazing talent and drive into organizing people. After this election he wants to keep the momentum going by organizing people locally and enouraging high school and college kids to become politically active and vote. I was also really lucky because I wasn’t sure if I would even make it out to the event to vote for him. It was held a few towns over, and I had to take both kids, and my health has been so fragile that I spent the whole week leading up to the event doubting if I could go. It wasn’t easy, but I got us all there in one piece, voted for my husband, took some great pictures and made some new friends. I have not been taking any moment of health for granted. Not one bit.
–Last week, in a fit of frustration, I made a vow. One of the deep frustrations of having a chronic illness is being too sick to create art, which is part of my core identity and personhood. I decided I was going to take at least one photo a day with my big camera, with the intention of creating art, every single day, unless I am too sick to lift my camera. I don’t care if I have to take photos from the couch for a year, or if all my photos are of the ceiling of I have to lay down. I’m going to attempt to do this one thing to create art every day. And I have been, and I’m more determined than ever. Soon, as my health increase (and I must believe I will progress), I’ll post some of them here to share with you. Shots from the couch might not be cutting-edge exciting, but I’m going to find a way to make it art. Every artist creates within their limits, and I’m going to do the same.
–Isobel has been taking gymnastics for about a year now, and last weekend she participated in her first ever Gymfest to show off her skills. I am so proud of her! I lack any athletic ability and spend so much time sick as a child I never participated in organized sports. The one thing I could do is swim, and although I could never do that competitively, I did spend time mastering the different strokes and having a great time. I am so glad that Isobel is continuing to learn and surpass me physically. It means a lot to me to watch her succeed.
—My best friend used to be heavily involved in Gynmastics and worked as a coach and participated in Gymfest for years. It was really interesting to attended after hearing so much about it. I have such respect for those young coaches, especially Isobel’s Coach Becca. I know from listening to Stef exactly how hard they work.
–The other day I ran into the living room because I thought Elias was crying, but he was just singing the Adventure Time theme at top volume. He loves to sing.
–The poppies are in bloom and are a constant source of pleasure.
–Hard times are again upon us, and our lives have been affected by layoffs. Any spare job-hunting vibes you can send our way are much appreciated! A few people have asked for more tangible ways to help our family, and so if you like it would also be appreciated if you supported my Society6 shop or passed the link on to friends and family. I also generate a small amount of income through this blog, so getting the word out about Little Big helps, too. Thank you for all your support.
