–Super long Little Big Links today. That’s what happens when lots of time passes between Snapshot posts. Sorry about that/You are welcome.
–Like the rest of America, our family has been playing Pokemon Go constantly. Our favorite haunt is the University near our house. One night Anthony took the kids and easily saw over a hundred people out and about playing, too. Every time we go out we see scores of people playing and have had several entertaining conversations with random people. Isobel always attracts attention in her Pikachu hoodie, which has also been a lot of fun. It doesn’t get much better than playing outside, gaming with your whole family, and meeting up with friends. While we were out, Isobel turned to me and said, “This gives me tears: I am out of Pokeballs.”
–What I love about Cons: come in your awesome costume, come in your lazy costume, come in a costume you cobbled together that makes no sense. I was able to attend this year’s ModestoCon with my family and our friends, thanks largely to my cane, and finally had a chance to see my friend Jenny in all her mermaid glory. We dressed the kids in their Halloween costumes, and many people asked Isobel if they could take her picture, or be in a picture with her, so she had her a primer in con etiquette. People watching was my favorite part of the Con, and I saw some amazing costumes, as well as costumes that made no sense, such as the storm trooper with Freddy’s mask and glove-claw. But whatever! It’s a Con, and you can do that at a Con. It’s part of the random fun.
–Anthony and I didn’t dress up, but we did represent by wearing ST:TNG t-shirts. I found a pretty cool shuttle craft model as well as an Enterprise D model coated in shiny gold paint, which I don’t understand. Is it the Ferengi Edition Enterprise?
–After the con we went to a place for lunch that literally had a guide for how to take selfies in that restaurant. So, of course, Ang and I had to take a selfie with their giant cardboard chicken. I laughed a little loudly at something Angela said while we were eating and Isobel, mortified, said MOM EVERYONE CAN HEAR YOU. (Naturally, I laughed some more.)
–Kingston is a little obsessed with the Illuminati, despite not really knowing what it is. (I asked him, and he said the Illuminati was “mysterious. It’s too mysterious.” Then he added, “It’s like money. No one knows where money comes from.” That’s good enough for me! He was showing me all the Illuminati signs he knows, so I told him that if he covers one eye and looks at someone, and they cover their eye back, they are Illuminati. Then we took a bunch of eye-covering photos. Elias did his best.
–On the health front: I feel better! And then worse. And then better! And then really awful. Right now, I’m more or less okay. I’m reminded of the old axiom healing isn’t linear. I have some success on my new treatment, so I’ve started weaning myself off steroids, which carries its own issues. I wasn’t on a large dose, but I was on them a long time. I’ve also had two big doctor appointments in the last week, with two big take-aways: I’m getting a handicapped placard for my car, finally, and I am being sent to Stanford for my rheumatoid arthritis work-up. I have so much going on, health-wise, and I suppose it was only a matter of time before I was sent there. As I left her office I walked through her waiting room filled with elderly women. I was kitted out in my vintage blouse, bag, and scarf, and like them, I also had a cane. I thought to myself, Old ladies, I am become you.
–In Terrible Twos News: Elias screamed at me for five minutes one morning because he didn’t want me to wear a sweater//Elias is extremely upset I have hair//Elias unspooled and entire roll of toilet paper and shoved it in the toilet//He has learned to hold hands.
–My husband was offered yet another job. He is the Riker of job offers. (He is quite happy where he is.)
–Having an autoimmune disease is like having God saying “Quit hitting yourself! Quit hitting yourself!” for the rest of your life.
–Still watching Voyager. I love Janeway. Janeway gets shit done. I want to be a Janeway.
Poke Glo for Pokemon Go Safety. I love this kid!
Just another unrealistic body expectation for teenagers. I have a feeling this guy hangs out with Ice King.
The sky in Miami is breathtaking. Nature just trolled us.
Disneyland employs semi-feral cats for mouse control. Nothing personal, Mickey.
Sometimes you open the circ desk browser and it’s set to the LCSH page for “Boating with cats.” When we’d go sailing in Grandpa’s pirate ship, we’d sometimes sail past some friends who always took their cat sailing.
Why Florida is so goddamn Florida. The origin story of Florida Man.
US government plans to use drones to fire vaccine-laced M&Ms near endangered ferrets. At no point in this headline sentence could I predict where it was going.
A whole damn cake. I’ve seen people bust out bags of Carl’s Jr. or unwrap a giant taco truck burrito, but never this.
Very curious about how many times this happens daily in front of Trump Tower. I hope all of them.
