It has been quite some time since I’ve given you another round of the Thrifted Home Tour, and this is because I am running out of rooms to feature. But today I have something very exciting for you: our guest bathroom, or as we call it, the Pirate Bathroom. Arrr! You can find the rest of the Thrifted Home Tour here.
We’ve been living in this house since 2005 and in all this time the guest bathroom never really fit in with the rest of the house. It all started when we first moved in. The previous occupants must have wanted to paint this room a jarring school bus yellow, but changed their mind because the walls were flat neutral color except for one large circle of sloppily painted yellow, like a sun in a child’s drawing, about a foot in diameter in the center of the wall.
The bathroom was the least of our concerns, though, because first we had to deal with the mess they left in the kitchen, and while we were going through shades color for the kitchen walls we accidentally ordered too much of the pinkish color you see in the bathroom. Rather than waste that paint we used it in the bathroom and laundry room, even though I really didn’t care for it. The moral of this long and not terribly interesting story is that I’m not happy with the wall color, and we’re eventually going to repaint it. The floors, too, are ancient linoleum and need to be redone but we didn’t want to commit to such permanent changes until we decided what we were going to do with this space.
But all that changed when I discovered Pinterest. A twitter friend of mine pinned this shower curtain that she found and I fell in love. It was exorbitantly expensive but it was the shower curtain of my dreams. Fortunately it was the shower curtain of Anthony’s dreams, too, and he let me buy it on one condition: that we decorate the guest bathroom in a pirate theme.
Now I’m not interested in theme decorating, like at all, but I was on board. (Arrrr!) I’ve been collecting sea and nautical-themed items while thrifting and I’ve pared the decor down to what I think it a tasteful pirate theme for the bathroom. Yar.
The thing with themes, and this can happen very quickly and very easily when you’re an avid thrifter like me, is that you can find so much good stuff that one day you notice the bathroom looks like a seaworthy Applebees threw up all over your walls. You have to be careful not to get carried away by your enthusiasm for your theme, especially if your room is really small.
I mentioned the curtain came from the interwebs and it’s actually made by the Kraken Rum company and has their logo at the top. This is annoying, because I do not like advertising for brands unless they hand over some booty. In fact, I sort of feel like they hijacked my bathroom and boarded my shower curtain. Scurvy knaves, the lot of them! The little table was thrifted for fifteen bucks and stores Isobel’s bath towels perfectly.
The seashell came from my mother’s house and the thrifted basket typically holds Isobel’s washcloths.
That canvas print is a Marushka. I found this Japanese-made ceramic whale while thrifting and I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to hold your scrub brush near the sink. We just use it as decoration but sometimes I like to put Isobel’s rubber ducky inside there.
This silver tray was handmade in England and has a whaling scene carved into it.
And that’s me! Technically I’m vintage but Etsy frowns on selling people.
The milkglass vase has vines and grapes carved in it in relief and stores Isobel’s hair clips. I plan on hanging the ceramic painting next to it on the wall. It reminds me of a scene from a porthole.
These hooks were there when we bought the house, but they remind me of a whale’s tail.
You might remember “The Bounty” from earlier in the Thrifted Home Tour. At that point we were going to hang it up in the laundry room, but this is a way better idea.
The sailing ship tea towel features illustrations of actual historical vessels and is one of my favorite things in the bathroom. Below that I have a silver dish with an inside burnished in a way that reminds me of mother-of-pearl. The whale bowl is vintage monkey pod, the shell came from my aunt’s house, and the glass bottle has a sailing ship design on it, too.
Oh yeah, The Bounty is actually a dart board.
My most recent find for this room is the nautical barometer. I don’t think it’s functional anymore, but I love it.
