For me, a trip out of town just isn’t complete without a stop at a thrift store. This weekend, on our way out of town from visiting friends Jake and Caleb, we stopped at Sacramento’s Thrift Town. I had been dying to hit up some thrift during our short stay in the capital, and my thrifting friend and local resident, Christi, suggested Thrift Town, as it’s one of her favorites. We were not wrong to trust her.
Like Goodwill, Thrift Town color-codes their items based on date, and they have regular sales to make sure the merchandise doesn’t linger on the shelves too long. Thrift Town is a chain, like Goodwill, but in some ways it felt more like a Mom ‘n Pop. The store was clean, warm, and while full of great selection was still surprisingly well-organized. Though only one of our items qualified for the sale, I have to say the prices were much better than at Goodwill. We bought a basket full of clothes and some odds and ends that we probably would have payed twice as much for at Goodwill. I am not at all surprised why Christi keeps coming back for more.
Most of our finds were cold-weather related, and Isobel especially got some great stuff. I recently went through her closet and pulled out a bunch of 5T stuff for donation (she’s seven and a half now, so, it was time). She needed long sleeve shirts, and she’s a bit picky about what she will wear, and we still managed to find her a bunch of shirts. But before that, here’s our two favorite finds of the day.
Isobel has been begging me for some gloves and mittens just about every morning as we walk to school. I found these, the perfect combination of gloves and mittens, with a bonus squirrel face on the front.
They look brand new and never worn. So cute!
Ta da! The tops fold down, and–fingers!
(A forlorn brother looks on in the background.)
(Just kidding, he’s not really forlorn.)
My favorite find of the day was brand new and still had the tags on: a super soft knit infinity scarf. Its navy blue and white pattern reminds me of shibori designs. I still had a lot of Japanese patterns in my head from visiting Oto’s Japanese market during my trip and drooling over the blue and white porcelain dishes.
Pictures don’t do it justice. It is so soft and so warm. It might be my go-to scarf this winter.
I pulled off the tags and washed the scarf and gloves as soon as I got home so they’d be ready to go today.
These four shirts were Isobel’s wardrobe haul, and though they looked great when I bought them, they stayed shoved in their plastic bag since right before I took these photos, so they are pretty wrinkled. Isobel is so picky I have to make sure that she not only likes an item I buy for her, but that she will consent to wearing it to school–the ultimate test. All of these passed with flying colors.
I got these foam shapes for the kids to play with, though I am not looking forward to cleaning them up when they are inevitably dumped on the floor. The large bag of beads were a bit of a splurge at $3, but my cousin’s kids are coming over for a play date this week and beads like this are an instant craft activity. Plus, so pretty, and so many uses!
The kids and I each got a winter hat (sorry, Anthony). Elias’ is Volcom, Isobel’s is Osh Kosh, and mine originally came from Target. It was also new. The ombre gold tones are a perfect fit for my hair.
We found two toys for Elias for a dollar each that he absolutely loves. This Backpack is from Dora the Explorer, and can open up to carry things around. He loves loves loves it. We don’t even watch Dora, but he instantly remembered the song. Apparently this backpack has a space for a battery and a little speaker but I’m not sure if we are going to go there. It’s fine the way it is.
I almost left without seeing this cute little Fancy Bear bag that still had its Daiso tag on it. Daiso famously sells things for US $1.50, so getting this bag at a dollar at Thrift Town was slightly cheaper than if I purchased it new. Mostly I bought this because I think it would be a great bag for gift-giving in lieu of wrapping.
Lastly, Anthony found this little robot fella for Elias for a dollar. He loves it (though the backpack is the biggest hit).My kid has a soft spot for robots.
All in all, Thrift Town was an amazing place that surprised me. Great prices yet still very clean and organized. If you love thrifting and are in Sacramento, it is well worth the trip!
