–Isobel had a great birthday. I dropped off two dozen cupcakes for her class so she was very popular that day. When she got out of school, Elias and I were waiting for her with a giant Hello Kitty birthday balloon. Then we continued our tradition of going to Old Tyme Pastries and picking out some treats, which we ate there, but not before sticking a candle on top, lighting it, singing Happy Birthday, and quickly blowing it out. We went home and she had two neighbor girls over for some live-action Neko Atsume play. I cooked her favorite foods for dinner and then she had some quality time with Dad, her favorite playmate.
–Well, it happened. I lost my phone while I was looking for something else. Get on my level.
–Last week Anthony organized a Bernie Sanders barnstorm event in our town all by himself, and over fifty people showed up–standing room only. It was incredible. He had been to organizer events in a couple over towns up and down the freeway, and although we found Berner support in our town there wasn’t so much as wave-and-honk. When Anthony started planning it he wasn’t even sure anyone would show up, but they did in droves. I’m so proud of him. He’s also applied to be a delegate, which would be really exciting if he was picked.
–Isobel’s advice for swatting flies: Hide the swatter behind your back. Don’t let them read your brain.
–Elias is firmly in the terrible twos and way naughtier than Isobel ever was. Last week he got into my precious box of taco shells (DON’T JUDGE ME) and ripped all most all them in half. Those he didn’t destroy he somehow got wet. While I was dealing with that situation, he scattered the fruit from the fruit bowl all over our backyard and then heaved a vintage flower pot over his head and threw it to the ground like he was link looking for a rupee. I had to take him to the doctor with me on Tuesday, and last time he was so done with the long wait that when it was finally my turn he screamed thoroughout the whole appointment. I was smart and asked my mom to watch him this time, but she ended up being called in to jury duty. I think I outsmarted him, though, because when we were called in to see the doctor I plugged his mouth with a sucker to keep it occupied. It worked.
–I found Isobel a kids’ cookbook while thrifting and put it in her stocking for Christmas this year, and over Spring Break she became obsessed with it. Her favorite things to make are sauteed corn and chocolate-dipped strawberries.
–Operation Poppy Lawn isn’t as successful as I’d hoped. I should have gotten the seeds out there before Christmas, or the very least, January. I do have five bunches in our lawn that are doing well, but it’s a far cry from what I’d wanted. They are finally going to start blooming, and I can’t wait, as I’ve been jealously ogling the neighbor’s poppies all month.
–Being sick is exhausting and also lonely as hell. I see the ladies at the pharmacy more often than I see my friends.
–I’m off steroids but I still have an appetite, which I can tell you, enjoying food again makes life worth living. When I have no appetite at all I feel like someone who is asexual, and has no sex drive at all, who works in porn. I’ve been indulging my appetite by trying a few new treats around town. We have our first creperie, and it did not disappoint. I love crepes and the closest place I knew of was in Japantown in SF, so I didn’t get them all that often, as you can imagine. We have a new barbecue place in town that Anthony and his coworkers went to recently and he discovered the miracle that is funnel cake fries, that come with chocolate, caramel, and strawberry dipping sauce. So heavy, but so good. We also have a really good ice cream shop in town that makes small-batch ice cream on site, and I tried their Lucky Charms ice cream recently, and it is magically delicious! I don’t even care for the cereal. Everything I’ve had at Oak Barrel Cremery is so, so good. Isobel refers to it as her favorite restaurant.
–When Elias was crying because Anthony left, Isobel put one of his work shirts on, pretended to come in the front door, and said, “Don’t worry, Elias! Daddy is home!”

Donald Trump’s 4-hour sleep habit could explain his personality. This article is about two things: Donald Trump not making any sense because he’s chronically sleep-deprived, and a very rare mutation that makes a tiny percentage of the population super humans who require half the sleep and are twice as energetic and efficient. To say I read this while feeling extreme jealousy for them is an understatement.
Paperback Paradise is my new favorite twitter account. They take old school paperbacks and re-title them and it’s the best thing ever. Some of my favorites: Pony Pals: Got My Mane Did, C’Mon, Man, I’m Tryin To Take A Ghost Shit, Go Apologize To God, This Drawing of A Dog’s Dick Is Top Secret, Fucking Run, The Sun Exploded, and Taco Bell Destroyed My Anus.
My son insisted that we give him beans so he could do a prank for April Fool’s Day. Got us. This is something Isobel would do.
Amazing fan-made Wonder Woman sweater pattern to download and knit. This is incredible.
I collect cameras & give them to the youth of Baltimore city. Send your unused equipment his way!
What have you noticed becoming really popular lately? They are going to be really confused by some of my answers, I think.
Keep It Cool In My Classroom, A Project By Ms Eisenhut. It is shameful that we make children endure such conditions while they are trying to get an education in America. I went to school with Ms Eisenhut, and I am proud that someone from my class is doing such good, important work. Help support these students.
Here is a great video about Neko Atsume. Do not let your kids watch.
