–Elias had a well baby visit as well as vaccinations yesterday. After the doctor did her checkup she told me to just leave his diaper off until the nurse came with the injections. I don’t know why I listened, because almost as soon as she left he started urinating all over the floor. Like a lot. Like Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own a lot. There wasn’t anything for me to clean it up with in the room, so I scrambled through the diaper bag and used the absorbent powers of two diapers and a bunch of stiff paper towels I found by the sink. I was able to clean it all up, but while I was Elias managed to get the door open and run down the hall wearing nothing but a t-shirt and socks and shrieking with joy at his newfound freedom. I bet they tell stories about us after each visit.
–Earlier this week we met up with my parents to take family photos–our first as a family of four. We were able to get lovely shots of us as a family, of me and Anthony together, and of our family with my parents. I wanted to get photos of just the two kids together, but Elias has entered this super clingy stage where he demands to be held by me in any new situation and woe to the person who tries to keep us apart. If I leave and he stays at home with Anthony or my mom, he’ll wander the house looking for me while screaming. It is so sad. I can’t wait to get the photos back.
–A week ago a backpack containing ammunition was found at my daughter’s school campus. The police investigated but found no imminent threat, and school continued as usual. I, of course, worry about things in the best of times, and have been on edge. My anxiety was so high I didn’t even want to talk about it online until I was able to process it a bit. In all likelihood it was a sick prank, but after talking to my cousin I conceded it was possible that someone wanted to anonymously turn it in, and school campuses aren’t monitored like police and fire stations. It’s possible. I admit to calling my daughter’s school a few times under false pretenses just to check that things were okay. I live near there and anytime I hear sirens now I get jumpy. This is what it’s come to.
–I’m housemistress on Snapchat! I don’t know how to add anybody or how to do anything.
–Elias was sick last week, as I mentioned, and Anthony was sick after that. I may have actually had it first as my throat was really sore for a few days before they were sick. When you feel awful on a regular basis, it can be hard to tell what is a cold or flu and what is just business as usual. I thought I did a pretty good job of handwashing and keeping germs at bay, but Elias did end up throwing up all over me. You do what you can.
–School pick up is terrible and school drop off is great. When it comes time to pick Isobel up, it’s a long walk from the car to the classroom in the hottest heat of the day. It’s miserable. The wait is boring for Elias. It’s fun once we get her, but then it’s a long walk back to the car and there’s always a ton of traffic. School drop off is lots of fun. Elias is always in a great mood from just waking up, the weather is nice and cool, and if we get there early enough, the kids have some time to play together before the bell rings. It’s fun times.
–This weekend I was very sick, probably from the week’s worth of solo parenting I did while Anthony worked late on a project, but it was actually really nice because Anthony took over the lion’s share of parenting and household duties. It’s so much easier to be ill when all you have to take care of is yourself. I know many people who are so ill that even trying to do that much a is terrible struggle. I’m grateful.
–I’m still working with the nice folks at Yumbox to put together a giveaway for Little Big readers. I really love their system and I’d love for you to try it, too.
