–Happy Earth Day! Try not to pressure wash your driveway and sidewalk during a drought like my asshole neighbor.
–It has been a really hard week, a hard last couple of weeks, actually, but the complete health meltdown at the same time as the car broke down and our hard drive crashed (again), really was a triple dose of horrible. Things are looking much better this week. Through lots of hard work and my husband’s computer wizardry, the computer is up and running again (though I lost all data after February–thanks, Carbonite), the car cost only a few hundred to fix instead of a few thousand, and I am moderately functional again. I’m being treated for my condition and next week I have a doctor appointment to figure out if I need surgery or if a less-invasive procedure will suffice. Right now I’m on an antibiotic with a crazy laundry list of side effects. The most annoying ones would probably be that it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth that is made worse by drinking water. It also makes me very thirsty. I’m better but my health is still wildly unpredictable, varying by the day and even sometimes by the hour. The uncertainty has taken a toll on the family, as nobody knows whether their wife or mother will be functioning at any given time.
–My extremely talented friend Sarah, internationally published fine art and conceptual photographer, been working on an online photography class called Introspective. It’s more than just a photography class as it’s about using photography and self portraiture as a means of emotional expression and self-discovery. The self portrait angle is very loose; you’re never required to actually be in the image unless you want to be. The photos themselves are a reflection of who you are. This is great for anyone on a journey of self discovery or someone exploring spirituality or archetypes. I haven’t taken this course myself yet with everything I have going on health-wise, but I definitely plan to in the future. Sarah is offering Little Big readers a discount of over 20%. By using code LittleBig55 you can take this amazing course for $55 instead of the usual $75–a steal for a photography class. Please note you don’t even need to consider yourself a photographer or even have a fancy camera to take this class. You can use your cellphone camera. All that’s needed is a desire to express yourself and Sarah will give you the tools and lead the way. Sarah’s photographs are dreamlike and ethereal.
–Anthony cleaned the house so I’m spinning in the living room with my arms out wide like Maria Von Trapp.
–While I was changing his diaper the other day Elias said ‘poo poo.’ It was hilarious. He can say Mama, Dada, kitty, up and poo poo. I’m teaching him the important things in life.
–Last weekend we took the kids to Toys R Us (Isobel keeps forgetting and calling it Kids R Us, which makes sense if you think about it as there’s a Babies R Us) to spend some of their sweet sweet birthday gift cards. Isobel’s Aunt and Uncle gave her a Lego Elves set and she is now obsessed with them, so we picked up another set for her and a plastic kiddie pool for summer. We’ve been using it to replace the cardboard box from Ikea that was our makeshift ball pit.
–While getting ready for the kids’ birthday party, Isobel and I spent some time in the bathroom primping, just the two of us. After a few minutes Isobel said, “It’s fun spending time together.” It was the best thing ever.
View or order maps of your favorite Nat’l Park on our USGS Store. I’m getting Yosemite for sure.
Painfully literal Swedish idioms translated. I use “this tastes like the butt” all the time.
Joker And Luke Skywalker Have A Chat, Courtesy Mark Hamill. Mark Hamill has done an impressive amount of voice-acting.
Lombard School, c1700: Cats being instructed in the art of mouse catching by an owl. That owl is in trouble if those cats decide to work together (they probably won’t).
Let’s just say I’m buying a gun and an armadillo. (My MIL is actually fabulous and I don’t know what I’d do without her.)
FRIDAY. This is me except I have much longer hair and much less money.
How I walk into the club. This is how I do everything while I feel sick.
Today is National bookmobileday! I picked out some unusual ones from around the world. Thank you, PeeWee.
17 Facts about Hillary Clinton that have nothing to do with her politics. I am going to bake the fuck out of her published recipe for chocolate chip cookies.
This is what a librarian looks like. Eyehearts! (And not just because I know one or two!)
‘Bees are good!’ Obama says as children scream. This story isn’t exactly new news, but I giggle every time I see the headline.
America’s first shopping mall is now filled with micro-homes. Would you have ever/ever consider doing this? I’m fascinated by the whole idea.
