In that amazing way that only it can do, the internet connected me with a local woman named Bonnie a few years ago. I got to know her, her amazing family, and her amazing bread, and the more I knew the more special they became to me. Bonnie has one of my favorite IG accounts, and I always took it for granted that I’d meet her, her kids, and her chubby delight of a baby, Dahlia, before too long. Something always got in the way. She’s only about 30 miles from my house –which is nothing in internet miles!–but being sick or pregnant or not having gas money always got in the way. Last weekend I received some devastating news about their family. Sweet baby Dahlia, only six months old, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. In the blink of an eye she went from perfect, happy baby, to a beloved memory. I know the vast majority of you don’t know Bonnie and Dahlia, but if you can spare a donation friends of the family set up a gofundme to cover medical bills and funeral arrangements. The last thing they need at this time is stress about money.
But there’s another way you can help. Family friend Apryl is hosting an auction for the Ohara family on her Instagram account tomorrow, June 11th from 8am-8pm Pacific Standard Time. She is going to be auctioning off some rad stuff and proceeds from the sale will go to help soften the blow of medical and funerary costs at this sensitive time. I am donating two items from my shop: a very rare Biz’ Beat of the Day children’s Yo Gabba Gabba ringer tee shirt in size 5-6 and a set vintage glass apple kitchenware items.
The apple set includes an adorable glass apple bowl that’s about 5 inches by six and a half inches – perfect for serving a generous amount of hummus or guacamole! – and four petite apple plates that are about four inches by four inches.
The Biz Markie shirt is in fantastic condition and the white color is bright and not dingy at all. I have seen lots of Yo Gabba Gabba shirts in my time (we saw them live back in the day!) and they are not easy to find, but I’ve never seen one featuring Biz before.
Both items will probably start around ten dollars, and 100% of my proceeds go to the family. It’s win-win because you get thrifted goodies and the satisfaction of helping a family cope during the worst pain of their lives.
Little Big readers, you have showed your kindness and generosity time and time again. I’m lucky to know you and I value each and every one of you.
The auction starts tomorrow, June 11th, from 8 am – 8 pm PST on Apryl’s IG account. I hope to see you there!
