Thrifty Crafting: Sweetheart Patch

The sweetheart patch is something that came to me by way of my mother, who used to patch the holes I’d get in my pants with iron-on patches that she would cut in the shape of hearts. She used to decorate many things with hearts in order to appease my sister and I, so when our pants needed mending, the heart shape was a given.

I wear all my clothes, especially pants, until they wear the hell out. One thing that tends to happen when you wear clothes for so long is they develop holes or unfortunate stains from eating chili or pomegranate seeds (not that I would know anything about that), and sometimes you accidentally buy a brand new pair of jeans from Old Navy that had been slashed by a box cutter. Perhaps you didn’t realize this until you drove all the way home and then you cursed those pubescent jerks for not knowing how to open boxes of merch properly. Jerks.

I wore this pair of pants around the house despite the holes and Anthony took to affectionately calling them the “butthole jeans” since they had holes in the rear. Ha. Aha ha ha.

Around this time I also noticed a hole in Isobel’s pink pants. And you, know, I can’t throw them away because they are P-I-N-K.

I bought some cute black and white polka dotted iron-on patches from Micheal’s and cut them to size by folding the patch in half and eyeballing it. You could also trace the shape freehand or use a heart cookie cutter as a stencil.

A few minutes with the iron later…

Ta da! Since the fabric of Isobel’s pants was so light I wedged a rag inside the pant leg so the adhesive wouldn’t glue the pant together through the hole.

They are a hit with everyone, including Squirrelly.

You’re so smart! I always forget that my mother used to patch my pants. They were always the big ugly iron on square knee patches though. These are so cute!

Those are really sweet. I hated having patched pants because my Mom used GIANT patches. Had they been adorable hearts? I might’ve been okay with them.

It’s funny because my mom would never consider herself “crafty,” but she did stuff like this for me all the time.
