It’s here! It’s now! It’s finally happening! Today is bento giveaway day on Little Big! But I should back up. What the heck are bentos, anyway?
Back in the dark ages when I worked at the library slinging books and shushing prepubescents for a living, I brought my lunch to work each day in an adorable obento, or Japanese-style lunch box. Many lunch-related adventures were had including the lady that microwaved a sandwich so foul I considered eating in my car. Fortunately, she was fired. Hooray! Another day I finally stood up to a snarky coworker and made Sarah and our friend Adam laugh so hard I thought he was going to herniate. I have those warm and fuzzy memories today thanks to the bentos.
But I no longer work and I typically eat my lunch at home next to an adorable toddler and all is right with the world except for the few thousand bentos and bento-related accoutrements that are taking over an entire storage bin in the garage. It’s too much! One might even say I have a plethora of pinatas bentos. Even though I still pack bentos for picnics or travel and fully plan on sending Isobel to school with adorably packed lunches, I have more than enough kawaii cuteness stashed away to feed an army of hungry Duggar children. This is where you, dear friends, shall benefit. Because I would like to put together not one! Not two! But THREE packed-to-the-brim cartons of bento-y goodness to three lucky readers! That’s right!
Just look at all that adorable crap! You know you want some! Best just got better – most of it is covered in hilarious Engrish. I love me some Engrish. Coworker story? Today my supervisor talked to her ma on the phone for about seven minutes. During which I (facing the opposite direction and clearly not paying attention) babbled on about bentos, all the while thinking that SHE was the one with the crappy conversation skills.
Then I realized she wasn’t actually talking to me at all and leaned over my iPhone and read twitter like nothing was wrong.
She might not even know yet. Hi, Sam. That happened today. Again. I know. You should really say “Hi Mom” when you start a phone call so this doesn’t keep happening…

Funny lunch story, while I was pregnant I had the unfortunate luck for my office door to face the suite microwave. I had to smell every heated lunch for hours and hours a day. NOT great for a pregnant lady. I sure wish THOSE folks had brought tasty bento lunches.

I’m a librarian! I even work in a library school! And I take my lunch all the time, but usually in halfway worn-out Ziplock knock-offs that are warped and don’t always have matching lids. So cute bento would be such an upgrade. If I can keep them away from my per-schoolers.

So last week at noon, a caterer brought a huge platter of cheese, meat, & crackers to the library. She said twice that it was FROM a group that used our meeting rooms and it was FOR the library, “just because.”
We took it back to the breakroom & started chowing down, when suddenly I thought maybe it was FOR the group who was actually meeting there right then. I went into the meeting, said a tray had been delivered, but we were confused. The woman said, “Oh, that’s for us. I’ll come get it!”
“No, no,” I said, “I’ll bring it in for you!”
Co-worker rearranged some of the lettuce garnishes, and I brought the tray to them. I apologized for the box of crackers that had obviously been opened. :-]

The only coworker lunch story I even remember is when my coworker microwaved her popcorn too long and set off the fire alarm. Another coworker then insisted that we call the fire department so they knew not to come out for burnt popcorn. I handed him the phone since I wasn’t about to make that embarrassing call since the fire department probably had no plans to come out.

I’m stuck in corporate america… and have to pack my lunch every day. Well I’d don’t have to but I’m too cheap to go out. How about a co-worker pet peeve. My only other female co-worker won’t change the toilet paper. She always leaves three little squares on the roll. Seriously what the f**k am I supposed to do with three squares. I feel like running out of the bathroom like a crazy person and throwing it on her desk.

engrish is very similar to how navajo speakers attempt english as well. i remember this one older navajo lady was telling us how bad ashii (salt) was and all she kept yelling to us was “it da silent killer, yiiyah (scary)!!” we were like 5 years old.

A few years ago my coworker decided to eat his lunch outside on a particularly nice spring day. An hour came and went. People started wondering where he was because he was due for a meeting with not only his superiors but also heads of other departments. He finally rushes into the office all red faced, sweaty and flustered. He had FALLEN ASLEEP on the park bench right outside our building! Luckily, his supervisors found the whole situation funny.

I don’t have a favorite lunch story, but a friend and I once got in a fight when we were pixilated on substances that shall remain unnamed. I chased her with a sprouty potato and freaked her out by rubbing the nubbly eyes on her and she parried by pulling out mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is HORRIFYING. Every right-thinking person knows this. anyway, she wrestled me to the ground and opened the mayonnaise in my face until I yelled “UNCLE!” This is the grossest misappropriation of food in my back catalogue. Yeah, I have the coolest pencil case! And it makes even more sense because it shows a black cat chasing a ladybug.
I love Engrish, but not as much as I love bento. It’s hard to get around here though, so I would be forever grateful if I was one of the lucky three.

I love bento. It means my kids will eat it happily. I’m not an ubermom, but have done some cute bentos. This week, it just got crammed into the box. My 9 year old spent at least part of lunch trying to figure out the puzzle and will it into something recognizable.
This would be wonderful! I have been trying to eat healthier, and really need a push in the right direction.
Sad story: The last time we went to an Asian grocery with our kids, another woman smiled at us, and said we were the only other non-Asians she’d ever seen there. No funny lunch stories though.

Have recently started bento-ing as well and found some great egg-shapers on ebay. I bought the car-shaped one and happily carried my car-egg to work. During lunch, my coworkers saw this and asked about it, after which I of course proudly displayed said car-egg. Only to be told by my colleagues: ‘how old are you exactly?’ LOL. But at least I had a happy zooming lunch
