The internet is a strange place. Last week I insulted the makers of Pinboard and this week they are giving away free accounts for Librarians until the first of the year. Although this was none of my doing–they were planning on giving away free accounts to librarians for awhile–I pounced on the free account. If you qualify, you should, too.
I signed up for free accounts with a few other bookmarking sites, but after poking around, guess which one I imported my precious, precious, data into? (Hint: look for their dolled-up mothers.)
You don’t even have to be a current librarian to qualify. From their website:
Merry Christmas Librarians!
Since the site had such a wonderful year, we’d like to share our good fortune with a group of particularly hard-working information wranglers. From now until January 1, we’re offering free Pinboard accounts to librarians. If you work in a library, or are getting your degree in library science, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org mentioning how you qualify and I will send you an activation code for the site.
If you’re one of the wonderful forward-thinking librarians who already joined the site, I’ll give you a free year of archiving instead.
Pinboard is what Delicious would have been had it not languished and stagnated under Yahoo’s care. Right now, my 4,500 bookmarks have been successfully imported, all the data intact. As I said previously, I filter, sort, and archive information by trade; it is my currency. This carefully collected information is nothing without a service to save and organize it for me.
What’s that saying that’s so popular this time of year? Oh yeah. Hallelujah.
